"Protect: Coastlines, Guns and Women in the Low Country" is a pilot episode of a series which highlights stories in local communities around issues of sustainability. These features are produced using film, photography and editorials to examine the challenges around meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the U.S. The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, to protect the planet and to ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

In November of 2017, the Two Lane team met and interviewed several people in the Low Country of Georgia and South Carolina on the topic of protection to understand the challenges the region faces as well as victories on the road to sustainable development.

On this page you will see the short film, excerpts, and one of the podcasts from "Protect". We are also working with local reporters in the region on editorial pieces in the areas of gun control, women's empowerment and coastal preservation.

This is the full interview with Queet Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and Sala Patterson, writer for "Protect":

We are currently looking for partners to help us to distribute these local stories widely and to produce more. Contact angela@twolanefilms.com for more information on these and our next stories.

To do this project, we worked in close cooperation with Ogeechee Riverkeeper,  LB4 and After FoundationGullah/Geechee Nation and Safe Shelter. Please consider getting involved in their organizations. They are all amazing people that we are proud to know.

“Here at Safe Shelter we believe that it is very important to educate communities about the impact that violence has on us all and the best way to do this is by allowing real everyday people to tell their stories and share their experiences.  I believe your film is - and will continue to be - a powerful springboard for people to engage in meaningful dialogue about the more complex societal issues we face, like domestic violence, racial and economic disparities and environmental injustice. We are proud to have been included in this very important piece of work”.

- Shalena Cook Jones, Esq. President, Safe Shelter Board of Directors
